Every so often I get the strongest craving for a big, meaty burger. There's something so satisfying about the way the meat, cheese, bun, and condiments just kind of melt together in perfect harmony in every bite. With this in mind, we decided to craft a healthier burger that's just as satisfying. We swapped ground beef for lean ground turkey, traded in the white bun for a heartier whole wheat bun, and kept the condiments on the macro-friendly side. We can't wait for you to try this one!

3 Reasons Why You'll Love This Recipe

  1. High-Protein Content: A high-protein turkey burger is an excellent choice for those looking to nail their protein goals. Protein is essential for muscle repair and growth, and a juicy turkey burger can provide a satisfying and protein-packed meal.
  2. Juiciness and Flavor: When prepared correctly, turkey burgers can be incredibly juicy and flavorful. Ground turkey, especially when combined with the ingredients we use in this recipe, can yield a moist and delicious burger.
  3. Versatility: The beautiful thing about burgers is that you can dress them up as much or as little as you wish! This is especially important when feeding a family or group of people. Set up your condiments and topping station and let each person build their own unique burger!

  • 1 Mixing bowl
  • 1 Grill
  • 1 Spatula
  • measuring spoons
  • 1 Measuring cup
  • 1 Cutting Board
  • 1 Knife
  • 1 Tongs
  • 1 Plate or tray

  • 1 lb. lean 93% ground turkey
  • ¼ cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For Serving

  • 4 whole wheat hamburger buns or buns of choice
  • Cheese slices, optional
  • Other toppings of choice: tomatoes, lettuce, pickles

  • Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, panko bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, and the large egg. Add a pinch of salt and a dash of pepper to taste. Using clean hands, gently mix all the ingredients until just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the burgers tough.
  • Divide the turkey mixture into 4 equal portions. With your hands, form each portion into a burger patty. Make sure the patties are evenly shaped and about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Press your thumb gently into the center of each patty to create a slight indentation – this helps the burgers cook evenly and maintain their shape as they grill.
  • Place the turkey burger patties on the preheated grill. Cook the burgers for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until they are cooked through and the internal temperature reaches 165°F. If you're adding cheese, place a slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute or so of grilling to let it melt.
  • While the burgers are cooking, cut the whole wheat hamburger buns in half and place them on the grill for about 1-2 minutes or until they are lightly toasted.
  • Once the turkey burgers are cooked, remove them from the grill. Place each burger on a toasted bun. Top with your choice of additional toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles.
  • Serve your delicious grilled turkey burgers with your preferred side dishes, and enjoy a flavorful and healthier burger option!

Cooking times may vary depending on the thickness of your turkey patties and the heat of your grill. It's essential to ensure that the internal temperature of the turkey burgers reaches 165°F  to ensure they are fully cooked.
Feel free to customize your burgers with a variety of toppings such as lettuce, tomato slices, red onion, pickles, or even avocado. Choose your favorite type of buns to complement the flavors of the turkey burgers.
If a grill isn't available, you can also cook these turkey burgers on a stovetop skillet or in the oven. Adjust cooking times and methods accordingly.
Serving Suggestions: Serve the turkey burgers alongside a fresh salad, coleslaw, or your favorite side dish for a complete and satisfying meal.
